Bacteriostatic Water — Research Grade Diluent

Bacteriostatic Water is a sterile aqueous diluent containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, which allows a vial to be entered more than once during a research workflow. Ascend Research supplies it in 3ml and 10ml vials, dispatched from within Australia for laboratory use only.

Grade USP-grade
Appearance Clear colourless solution
Available Sizes 3ml, 10ml per vial
Use Reconstitution of lyophilised research compounds
Storage Room temperature, 20–25°C
After First Entry Discard 30 days after first puncture

Research Context

Bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides in laboratory work. The benzyl alcohol content distinguishes it from sterile water for injection, which contains no preservative and is intended for single entry only. Compounds requiring acidic conditions are instead reconstituted with a dilute acetic acid solution.

Handling

Store at room temperature, away from direct light. Swab the stopper before each entry. Record the date of first puncture and discard the vial 30 days afterward. Do not use if the solution is discoloured or contains visible particulates.

What's Included

  • One sterile vial (3ml or 10ml, as selected)
  • Protective packaging

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth and permits multiple entries into the same vial. Sterile water contains no preservative and is intended for a single entry.

How long does a vial last once opened?
Discard 30 days after the first puncture.

Should I choose 3ml or 10ml?
The 3ml suits a single compound or small-scale work; the 10ml suits multiple reconstitutions or larger vials.

Can bacteriostatic water be used for every compound?
Most lyophilised peptides reconstitute in bacteriostatic water, but some require an acidic diluent such as 0.6% acetic acid. Check the requirements of the specific compound.

Does it need refrigeration?
No. Store at room temperature, 20–25°C.

Where does Ascend Research ship from?
Orders are dispatched from within Australia.
